The province of Bergamo is located at the heart of Lombardy — Italy’s most dynamic and prosperous region — which ranks among the fastest-growing areas in the entire European Union. This strategic position favours communication, transport, and market relations, contributing to the prestige and strength of the province as a whole.
The province of Bergamo has over 1.1 million inhabitants and covers an area of 2,722 square kilometres (accounting for 11% of the regional territory). Around the provincial capital lies a well-developed urban area which includes the city of Bergamo and its neighbouring municipalities. This area serves as a vital hub for economic and social activities.
To the north lies the mountainous area crossed by the two main valleys — the Serio and Brembo valleys. Leaving the city behind, the urban sprawl gives way to the pre-Alpine landscape. These valleys offer opportunities for hiking, skiing, and spa tourism, surrounded by stunning natural scenery.
The central and southern parts of the province are characterised by plains and gentle hills, where industrial and agricultural activities dominate. The hills, with their picturesque views, are often used for vineyards and recreational activities. The Bergamo area is made up of 243 municipalities, 139 of which belong to mountain communities.
The city of Bergamo itself has more than 120,000 inhabitants, but if the surrounding urban area is included, the total population reaches around 300,000. The city lies along the major communication and development axis connecting Lombardy and Veneto, roughly halfway between Milan and Brescia, each about 50 kilometres away. Its territory has long been integrated with European countries and markets.
Crespi d’Adda workers’ village
A jewel of industrial archaeology and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Crespi d’Adda is a late 19th-century workers’ village that embodies the story of Italian entrepreneurial vision. It features an urban layout perfectly integrated with the factory, where homes, school, church, and infrastructure coexist in a unified design.

“Il Caravaggio” International Airport – Orio al Serio
The “Il Caravaggio” International Airport consistently ranks as Italy’s third-busiest airport in terms of passenger traffic — exceeding 17 million passengers in 2024 — and as the sixth for cargo traffic.
With its 150 routes across 40 countries, the Bergamo airport represents a strategic asset for the province’s economic development, thanks to its advantageous geographic and economic position along some of the main axes of the trans-European transport network. Ongoing development projects, including the Bergamo–Airport– Milan railway link, will further strengthen its role as a key hub within both the local and Lombard mobility systems.
Università degli studi di Bergamo
The University of Bergamo comprises eight departments: Law; Engineering and Applied Sciences; Management, Information and Production Engineering; Humanities, Philosophy and Communication; Foreign Languages, Literatures and Cultures; Business Studies; Economics; and Human and Social Sciences.
The University offers a broad and modern educational programme, including degree courses taught in English, advanced research centres, and numerous laboratories available to students. Through its educational and outreach activities, the University provides innovative professional skills that support economic and social development, offering content of direct relevance to businesses.
Moreover, it boasts an active network of collaborations with both Italian and international universities and records a high placements rate among its graduates.
Fiera di Bergamo
Its privileged location, in the immediate vicinity of Orio al Serio International Airport and the A4 motorway, together with the prospect of a railway stop a few metres from the pavilions, make the Bergamo Fair a strategic and prime location for hosting all kinds of events. The facility has two separate multifunctional pavilions of 6,500 sq.m. each, in addition to a conference centre with equipped rooms with capacities ranging from 40 to 440 seats. Other versatile and multifunctional exhibition areas are ideal for largescale events and exhibitions. A development project for the fair district is underway,
which includes doubling the covered area, with the construction of two new structures behind the current ones, increasing the exhibition space from 13,000 to 26,000 square metres. The objective of the shareholders – the Chamber of commerce of Bergamo, the Municipality, and the Province – is to position the centre among the main players in
the national and international trade fair and conference sector.
POINT – Polo per l’Innovazione Tecnologica
Founded in 1996, the POINT is a Scientific Park of over 38,000 sq.m. housing companies, laboratories and research centres operating in innovative sectors. For a business, locating within the POINT facilitates contact with other science and technology parks, research centres, universities and the main public bodies.
Bergamo Sviluppo, the special company of the Chamber of commerce, is responsible for technological animation, providing services to support the growth and competitiveness of businesses and organisations. The POINT, together with Bergamo Sviluppo, is a scientific and technological park that belongs to the national InnovUp ecosystem, as well as being a member of IASP (International Association of Science Parks). Among the services available to businesses are, for example, the UNICA desk for consulting UNI technical standards, experiential laboratories to demonstrate the benefits of digitalisation and 5.0 technologies, and MaTech Point to disseminate knowledge of new materials and technological solutions. The POINT also hosts the Bergamo Sviluppo Business Incubator, which provides support and training services for the start-up or development of business activities in the services and manufacturing sectors.
