Tourism & Sport

For the Bergamo territory, tourism and sport are extremely important. The entire province stands out for the very wide variety of its tourist offer: from lakes to mountains, from the plains to the rivers, from spa centres to rich and genuine
gastronomy, providing leisure and wellness opportunities for the needs of any type of clientele.

In sport, this land has always excelled, giving Italy top-level champions in a wide range of disciplines, with results of considerable resonance both nationally and internationally.

Tourism promotion is entrusted to Visit Bergamo, an agency created by the joint initiative of the Camera di Commercio di Bergamo, the Provincia di Bergamo, and the Comune di Bergamo to promote the province’s economic and tourism system.

The Venetian Walls – UNESCO World Heritage Site

The Venetian Walls of Bergamo encircle the entire perimeter of Bergamo Alta, creating a powerful and harmonious profile that dominates the city at their feet. Built in 1561 by the Republic of Venice, they are a rare example of Renaissance fortification that has remained intact.
Today they are part of the transnational serial site “Venetian Works of Defence between the 16th and 17th Centuries,” recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With their bastions, monumental gates and panoramic walkways, the walls offer striking views in every season. They are a place for walks loved by both citizens and visitors, who here breathe in unparalleled history and beauty.

Lakes

Bergamo boasts two beautiful lakes — Lake Iseo and Lake Endine. These lakes attract visitors eager to admire their landscapes, enjoy outdoor sports and activities, and explore the charming villages along their shores. On Lake Iseo, a boat trip is highly recommended: several daily routes stop at various towns and at Monte Isola, the largest lake island in Europe. A variety of itineraries — by car, bicycle, horseback, or on foot — connect the lakes to the surrounding hills, allowing visitors to fully appreciate the natural beauty of this part of the Bergamo province.

Sentiero delle Orobie

The Orobic Alps form the mountainous ridge stretching from Lake Como to Valcamonica, marking the border between the provinces of Bergamo and Sondrio. Winding through this landscape is the Sentiero delle Orobie, a high-altitude hiking trail that crosses this mountain range over seven to eight days, offering breathtaking scenery throughout. Perfectly signposted and dotted with refuges and bivouacs, the trail is renowned among mountain enthusiasts — including many international visitors — who come to experience its extraordinary natural beauty.

Cascate del Serio

The Serio Waterfalls are one of the many natural wonders of the Bergamo mountains. They are the highest waterfalls
in Italy, plunging down a triple drop of more than 300 metres. The waterfalls are opened to the public five times a year — on four Sundays and one Saturday with a night opening — offering a truly unique and spectacular attraction for visitors.

La Via delle Sorelle

La Via delle Sorelle is a 130 km trail linking Bergamo and Brescia, passing through 36 municipalities in six stages of 20–25 km each. Created for Bergamo Brescia Capitale Italiana della Cultura 2023, the route winds mainly through the hills of the two provinces, offering a sustainable, slow-paced way to discover lesser-known places, local traditions, and typical products. The trail is enriched by artistic installations inspired by the values and landscapes of the journey.
It can be travelled on foot or by bicycle, with accommodation and dining options available along the route.

Ciclovia culturale Bergamo Brescia

The Ciclovia Culturale Bergamo Brescia is a 170 km cycling route connecting the two cities that shared the title of Italian Capital of Culture 2023. The main route stretches over 76 km, passing through historic centres, villages, and cultural sites, with an additional 70 km of loops and 8 km of pedestrian sections. Along the way, cyclists can explore over 800 points of interest, including castles, historic residences, monasteries, and natural landscapes. Atalanta – A football icon

Founded in 1907, Atalanta has long been a proud symbol of Bergamo’s sporting spirit. Legendary coaches, celebrated Italian and international players, and unforgettable presidents have all contributed to the history of a team that continues to bring Bergamo’s footballing tradition to the most prestigious stadiums in Italy and Europe. In 2024, Atalanta achieved the pinnacle of its history with victory in the UEFA Europa League. The team plays at its home ground which completed major modernisation works in 2024, giving the city a world-class sporting venue.

Cycling – A tradition of champions

Bergamo’s name is deeply rooted in the history of international cycling, with legendary figures such as Felice Gimondi, Giovanni Baronchelli, and Paolo Savoldelli among its icons. In earlier generations, Bergamasque champions like Pesenti, Bianchi, and Gamba not only achieved remarkable victories but also founded companies that went on to design and export bicycles — true masterpieces of craftsmanship and technology — around the world.

Volleyball – Bergamo is a land of champions

For decades, volleyball has been a proud emblem of Bergamo’s sporting excellence. Women’s volleyball in Bergamo, represented today by Volley Bergamo 1991 — which inherited the legacy of the legendary Volley Bergamo Foppapedretti — is one of the most successful and renowned teams on the international scene, celebrated for its
many national and continental triumphs.
